The evolution of the pharmacy profession toward the provision of patient-focused pharmaceutical care requires a high level of clinical knowledge and skills on the part of practitioners. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) revised its accreditation standards to require the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) as the professions only entry-level degree.
The Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTPD) is an on-line professional doctoral degree program which requires the 5 year Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy, residency in Ohio or contiguous states and licensure as a pharmacist. This program provides the opportunity for practicing pharmacists at the baccalaureate level to obtain the PharmD degree to enhance their ability to provide high quality pharmaceutical care. General capabilities of the PharmD graduate include patient physical assessment relative to attainment of pharmacotherapeutic endpoints, assessment of drug response, clinical evaluation of a broad range of adverse drug reactions, general therapeutic consultative services to the physician, and pharmacokinetic and toxicologic interpretation of drug concentration in blood and tissues.
